frevo

Masculine noun

1 – A dance originated in the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, in which dancers perform acrobatic moves and jumps while carrying a colorful umbrella. It is usually performed during the carnaval in Pernambuco.

2 – The music to this dance. A frevo orchestra features instruments such as the trombone, the trumpet, the saxophone and the tuba.

Important Information

In 2012, frevo was added to UNESCO's World Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
