Feminine noun Pl: marchinhas
A typical musical genre of Brazilian carnaval that emerged in Rio de Janeiro at the end of the nineteenth century. The first Brazilian marchinha, Ô Abre Alas, was composed by pianist and conductor Chiquinha Gonzaga in 1899. Although very popular in carnavais between the 1920s and 1960s, marchinhas are still played by several blocos, not only in Rio de Janeiro, but also in many other cities throughout Brazil. Their lyrics are usually humorous and abound with political and social references.
